The term is derived from the Greek word “gyne,” which means "woman," and “mastos” which means "breast.” Any male, any age can suffer from Gynecomastia, even adolescents. Among adolescents, symptoms usually disappear within a few months to a few years, at the most. Generally the result of a hormone imbalance, Gynecomastia is a buildup of adipose and glandular tissues.

Drugs, such as marijuana or steroids have also been known to cause Gynecomastia. In some cases, the development of large breasts in men can be due to obesity.
